On day 3 of our trip we went to Nara!
Nara was the first capital of Japan. It is located near Kyoto and is only a 30 minutes train ride from it. It is famous for its park with deer, which you can feed senbei(deer crackers). It also has the Todaiji temple where a giant Buddha statue is located.
Nara park
This is a park with the deer in it. They roam around freely and can do whatever they want. This includes harassing tourists for food. You can buy about 10 senbei cookies for about 150 yen. These are deer cookies and are specially made for them. You are not allowed to feed them anything else. I also tried the cookies, but they weren't that tasty. You can pet the deer and can even sit next to them. This is one of the main attractions of Nara.
Todaiji complex
The Todaiji complex can be found in the middle of the Nara park (no deer allowed). The main structure is basically there just to protect the giant Buddha that is standing in it. This statue is big, and as such the building surrounding it as well. There are also 4 guardians, one for each main cardinal directions. Again a lot of omiyage shops.
Nomikai!
Our Korean friends came to Kyoto for a day and in the evening we met up for nomikai. Lots of fun!
Will keep you all updated with what we did on day 4 tomorrow.
Regards,
