Higashihonganji!
This temple is on the route from our hostel to the train station. We had passed it multiple times already, but decided to go in this time as we had some spare time.
The higashihonganji is the biggest wooden structures. The temple is under renovation, so we weren't able to see everything. None the less the temple was very impressive, with a big open hall and multiple side structures. Inside the hall you could sit on the tatami mats(no shoes allowed) and look around or pray. There was also a small museum.
After this we continued on towards Kobe.
Kobe
Kobe is an harbour town about an hour away from Kyoto by train. It has a long trade tradition. They have a some old European style buildings from when the trade with the West was restricted to certain cities.
There is also a China town inside Kobe, which we visited. I tried some Peking duck there, but it wasn't that good (Chinese friend also said so).
We also visited a shrine and did some shopping in Kobe.
My tutor's family also lives in Kobe and we were invited over for dinner in their house. We had a lovely dinner called Nabe. This is where you have a pot and you add all sorts of vegetables, meat, fish, whatever and boil it. You then get a nice stew going, and it quite tasteful.
After having our dinner we went back to Kyoto to celebrate new years eve. However, new years eve isn't celebrated that much in Japan. So we just had a quiet night.
That is all for now,
Regards
